Since 1970, the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service has been providing 24-hour Emergency Medical Service to residents and visitors of the Mad River Valley, Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski areas. Since its inception, MRVAS has undergone considerable growth to keep pace with the growing needs of the community, as well as advances in emergency medical care.
The service is fortunate to have a highly dedicated group of over 60 volunteers, many of whom have advanced training and certification which enables them to perform advanced life support procedures. None of our volunteers are compensated for their time, which includes a minimum of five 12-hour duty shifts per month, plus at least one night of training each month as well as other duties required of any organization.
MRVAS welcomes new members. You will find information on joining MRVAS on the volunteer page of this website. We provide equipment and training, as well as a great opportunity to develop useful skills while giving something back to the community.
Our rescue team is comprised of many of our EMTs as well as volunteers from local fire departments. This team spends extra time training for the technical job of extracting patients from motor vehicle accidents or from other difficult and complex situations requiring special training and equipment.
Our service is also very fortunate to have a group of Valley residents who answer the calls for help and dispatch the crew members and ambulances. They do this from their homes and some of our local businesses. They, too, sign up for at least five 12 hour shifts each month, as well as attend a monthly training session. They are the first contact with MRVAS in an emergency. With a calm demeanor, they ensure that the appropriate emergency services get to the right place as soon as possible.
MRVAS has three Type II ambulances (one of which is four-wheel drive) as well as a Type I four-wheel-drive vehicle which is used for rescue. We operate under the medical direction of the Central Vermont Medical Center, Vermont EMS District 6. We also have available the DHART Helicopter for transport of critically injured patents for whom time to treatment may mean the difference between life and death.
As part of our commitment to our patients, Mad River Valley Ambulance Service has always treated any medical information obtained during the course of our duties as private and confidential. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, under the Privacy Rule, specifies our legal duties and privacy practices with regard to this medical information, which is now referred to as Protected Medical Information.
